I’m excited to share the cover for my next book in the Science Comics series, The Senses: Signals and Stimuli! Wow! Check it out!

If you think that’s exciting, just wait until you open it up. The Senses stars Paige, a young artist who thinks — no, who knows that she’s the best artist in her class. When she stumbles into a mysterious after school art club attended by animals from ants to whales, she gets a crash course in the many ways Earthlings experience our world and realizes that there’s no “right” way to do it. Featuring a star nosed sculptor, an eight legged weaver, a familiar pooch with a nose for smells, and many more, this one embodies the Science Comics call to action: get to know your universe!
I’ve briefly covered topics like vision and olfaction in previous volumes, and this gave me the opportunity to indulge my compulsion to always go one step deeper. It’s not enough to know that sounds are waves. Let’s talk about how the tiny hairs in your cochlea resonate at different frequencies to tease those waves into their constituent parts, allowing you to differentiate two instruments playing the same note. I love examing the everyday so closely that it flips all the way around to weird.
The Senses: Signals and Stimuli will be on shelves October 20 of this year from your friends and mine at First Second. Believe it or not, this is my seventh Science Comic! That’s in addition to a pair of titles in the sister series History Comics. If you haven’t read them all, it’s time to catch up!
