I recently migrated my minicomic videos over to my new YouTube channel, which was a good excuse to add another long out-of-print title to the archive. Actually, it’s also long in print!
Deep Time is a minicomic from 2021, a companion piece to Science Comics: Rocks and Minerals. One of the challenges I encountered while making that book was how to effectively communicate the scale of geological time in a traditional format. I think I managed it as well as possible, but the subject stuck with me. A billion is a thousand thousand thousand. 4.5 billion is even more! How can a li’l ol’ human wrap their li’l ol’ brain around that?
As usual, the answer is a minicomic. Deep Time is a history of Earth to scale. One millimeter per million years. Abandoning metric and including credits, that’s a 15-plus foot comic.
It’s frankly unreasonable. I’m very pleased with the final product, though. Do check out my other constructed comics as well if you aren’t familiar. I’m overdue to make another, but I’ve got plans, I tell ya! Big plans!
